Objective of the Game

The goal of classic Rummy is to be the first player to arrange all 13 cards in your hand into valid combinations and declare "Rummy".

To do this, you must form:

  • At least 2 sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence (without jokers).
  • Sets (groups of cards of the same rank).

Game Setup

  • Number of Players: 2 to 6 players.
  • Decks: 2 standard 52-card decks + 2 jokers (106 cards total).
  • Dealing the Cards:
    • Each player receives 13 cards.
    • The remaining cards form the closed deck (stock pile), and the top card is placed face-up to start the open discard pile.

Gameplay Step-by-Step

1. Starting Your Turn

On each turn, a player must draw one card:

  • Either from the top of the closed deck (stock pile).
  • Or from the top of the open discard pile (only the top card is available).

2. Forming Valid Combinations

On each turn, a player must draw one card:

Meld combinations onto the table if they meet the rules:

  • Pure Sequence: 3+ consecutive cards of the same suit without jokers (e.g., 7♣, 8♣, 9♣).
  • Impure Sequence: 3+ consecutive cards of the same suit with a joker (e.g., J♥, Q♥, Joker).
  • Set: 3 or 4 cards of the same rank but different suits (e.g., 5♦, 5♠, 5♥).

Add cards to existing melds (their own or opponents’).

3. Ending Your Turn

  • The player must discard one card face-up onto the open discard pile.
  • Play passes clockwise to the next player.

4. Declaring "Rummy"

  • If a player arranges all 13 cards into valid combinations (meeting the above requirements), they declare "Rummy" and reveal their cards.
  • Winning Condition: At least one pure sequence + other valid combinations.

Scoring & Penalties

Round Winner: Scores 0 points.

Losing Players: Points are tallied based on unmelded cards:

  • Number Cards (2-10): Face value (e.g., 5♦ = 5 points).
  • Face Cards (J, Q, K): 10 points.
  • Aces: 10 points.
  • Jokers: 15 points.

Maximum Penalty per Round: 80 points.

Important Notes:

  • If a player hasn’t made any valid melds before someone declares "Rummy," their penalty points are doubled.
  • If the closed deck runs out, the discard pile (except the top card) is shuffled to form a new stock.

Winning the Game

The game continues until a player reaches a predetermined score limit (e.g., 250 points). The player with the lowest total score wins the game.
